The Leeward Theatre is proud to announce the upcoming production of one of Shakespeare’s most elegant and controversial plays: The Merchant of Venice. This play contains some of William Shakespeare’s most beautifully written love scenes while displaying darker overtones of greed, hypocrisy, and racism beneath the attractive exteriors of the beautiful people of Venice.
The play reflects on the current state of our society and how we turn a blind eye to the mistreatment of others based on sex, race, religion, and status by those we are meant to admire most. This tension between the glitterati and the outsiders reminds us that “All that glisters is not gold.”
Bassanio has fallen on hard times and turns to dear friend Antonio for help. With his assistance he obtains a loan from Shylock the Jewish moneylender with only one condition: he gets the money back in three months or Shylock will take a pound of Antonio’s flesh… Bassanio’s journey to be with the golden Portia includes his friend Lorenzo running away with Jessica, Shylock’s daughter and so much more.
